EA Sports FC Mobile has started its new season with one of its more substantial gameplay updates, introducing a fresh PvE challenge, expanded tactical controls and new PlayStyles alongside updated visuals.
The EA Sports FC Mobile 27 update arrived on September 24 and puts more emphasis on squad management instead of simply encouraging players to rely on the same strongest starting eleven in every match. At the centre of the update are Gauntlet Mode and Game Plans, two systems designed to add more decision-making before and during matches.
The update also arrives alongside FC Mobile’s third-anniversary celebrations, giving returning players several reasons to check how the mobile football game has changed.
What Is the New Gauntlet Mode?
Gauntlet Mode is the biggest new addition in the FC Mobile 27 update.
It is a PvE mode built around a series of increasingly challenging matches. Players progress through rounds while completing objectives and managing a squad that cannot simply use the same footballers repeatedly.
Each Player Item has a limited number of appearances available during a Gauntlet. Winning a match uses one appearance from every player who took part. Once a footballer runs out of appearances, that player becomes unavailable for later matches.
That changes how players have to think about team selection.
Using the strongest squad immediately may help clear an early match, but it could leave fewer top players available when the difficulty increases. Saving stronger cards for later rounds may therefore become a better strategy.
The system encourages players to build deeper squads and make greater use of footballers who might otherwise remain unused.
Match Rules Can Completely Change Each Round
Gauntlet Mode is not only about rotating players.
Individual matches can include objectives, modifiers and special House Rules that alter how the game works.
Hot Zone, for example, awards additional points when goals are scored from designated areas of the pitch. Position Hero rewards goals scored by players operating in particular positions.
No Rules removes fouls and offsides, producing a much less conventional match.
Modifiers can also influence attributes such as stamina, shot speed and passing speed for particular positions.
That means players may need to change both their squad and their approach depending on the match in front of them.
Each game can offer up to three stars linked to objectives. Completing mandatory tasks allows progression, while optional objectives can provide additional stars and unlock higher reward tiers.
Matches can also be replayed, giving players another chance to earn stars they missed previously.
Game Plans Add More Tactical Control
The second major feature is FC Mobile Game Plans.
Players can now prepare different combinations of formations and mentalities before a match and switch between them while playing.
Five mentalities are available: Ultra Attacking, Attacking, Balanced, Defensive and Ultra Defensive.
A player protecting a narrow lead could move from an attacking setup into a deeper defensive formation without waiting until the match ends. Someone chasing a late equaliser could do the opposite and switch to a more aggressive setup with additional players moving forward.
This gives matches a tactical layer that previously felt more limited on mobile.
Instead of committing to one formation regardless of what happens on the pitch, players can react to the score, the opponent and the stage of the game.
Game Plans are available in Division Rivals Head-to-Head and selected PvE matches, although they are not supported in every FC Mobile mode.
Each Mentality Changes How the Team Behaves
Selecting a mentality does more than change a label on the tactics screen.
An Attacking setup encourages more forward movement and greater offensive pressure, while Defensive pushes the team into a more compact shape and reduces the number of players committing themselves forward.
Ultra Defensive takes that approach further, dropping the team deeper when protecting a lead.
Ultra Attacking does the opposite and is designed for situations where scoring quickly matters more than leaving space behind.
Balanced sits between the two extremes and is likely to remain useful for players who prefer to adjust based on how a match develops.
Formation, player position and individual work rates still influence the final behaviour of the team, so choosing a mentality will not make every squad play identically.
New PlayStyles Give Players More Specialised Abilities
The EA Sports FC Mobile 27 update also expands the game’s PlayStyles system.
Among the additions are Incisive Through Pass and Dead Ball.
Incisive Through Pass is focused on improving passes that break through defensive lines, potentially making players with the PlayStyle more effective when creating chances behind an opponent’s defence.
Dead Ball is designed around set pieces, helping relevant footballers perform more effectively from free kicks and similar situations.
PlayStyles are intended to make individual footballers feel more distinctive beyond their basic overall rating and attributes.
For squad building, that creates another factor to consider. A player with a slightly lower overall rating may still be valuable if a particular PlayStyle fits the way someone prefers to attack or defend.
FC Mobile Also Gets a Visual Refresh
Gameplay systems are not the only part of the update.
EA has refreshed parts of the game’s presentation for the new season, including visual and audio changes intended to make matches feel different from the previous version.
The new season also brings updated squads and kits, keeping the game aligned more closely with the current football calendar.
The update coincides with EA Sports FC Mobile’s third anniversary, which began with community voting that allowed players to help choose footballers and soundtrack selections for the anniversary event.
Selected anniversary players became available on September 24 alongside the Season 27 update.
Squad Depth Matters More Than Before
Gauntlet Mode may ultimately have the largest effect on how long-term players manage their clubs.
Mobile football games naturally encourage users to collect the highest-rated cards possible and build one powerful starting eleven. A mode built around limited appearances pushes in another direction.
A strong substitute or reserve player suddenly has more value if the first-choice option cannot be used in every round.
Combined with FC Mobile Game Plans, the update gives players more reasons to think about the structure of their entire squad rather than individual ratings alone.
That makes Season 27 feel less like a cosmetic yearly refresh and more like an attempt to add new tactical decisions to the mobile game.
Players still need to win matches, but choosing who plays, when to save important footballers and how to change tactics during a game now matters more.
For a title entering its third year under the EA Sports FC name, that added depth could be one of the most important changes in the new season.
