JSW Steel, the flagship business of the diversified US$ 23 billion JSW Group, reported consolidated crude steel production of 22.93 lakh tonnes for May 2026, registering 15% year-on-year growth.

Production break-up

Indian operations contributed 21.98 lakh tonnes, up 15% from 19.17 lakh tonnes in May 2025. JSW Steel USA (Ohio) produced 0.95 lakh tonnes, up 20% from 0.79 lakh tonnes a year ago.

Note, the steel business undertaking of Bhushan Power and Steel Limited (BPSL), a subsidiary of the company, was transferred on a slump-sale basis to JSW-JFE Steel Limited (JV company) in March 2026. Production figures relating to the transferred undertaking have been reduced from the previous year’s numbers for comparison.

What drove the growth

Production was higher in May 2026, mainly due to full operations of the Dolvi unit, where one of the blast furnaces was under planned maintenance shutdown in May 2025.

JVML operations being fully ramped up also contributed to the jump. The numbers are significant as JSW Steel holds a combined crude steel capacity of 37.9 MTPA, including 4.5 MTPA through the JSW JFE Steel JV, making output utilisation a key indicator of operational health.

Capacity utilisation and ongoing shutdown

Blast Furnace 3 (BF3) at Vijayanagar is under shutdown for capacity upgradation and is expected to restart in the second fortnight of June 2026.

Capacity utilisation for Indian operations, excluding BF3 capacity, stood at approximately 98% for the month. Including BF3 capacity, it was at 87%.

The Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka is the largest single-location steel-producing facility in India with a current capacity of 19.5 MTPA. It is being expanded to approximately 25 MTPA by FY30, which would make it the world’s largest steel plant. The company’s next phase of growth is targeted to take the combined capacity to 54.8 MTPA over the next four years.

Sustainability and global standing

JSW Steel is ranked 6th among the top 34 world-class steel companies by World Steel Dynamics as of December 2025, and first globally in the steel sector in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA 2025).

The company has been named WorldSteel’s Steel Sustainability Champion consecutively for eight years from 2019 to 2026. JSW Steel aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 42% from steel-making operations by 2030 and has committed to achieve net-neutral carbon emissions for all operations under its direct control by 2050.
