Hyderabad-based defence manufacturer Sigma Advanced Systems Limited, formerly known as Megasoft Limited, announced Monday that it has secured a Rs 1,013 crore (roughly USD 104.9 million) export order from a North American customer for the manufacture and supply of 147,000 units of 155mm base bleed artillery shell bodies.
The company says the order will be executed over the next 6 to 12 months. Shares of Sigma Advanced Systems rose 5% to Rs 549.15 on the NSE following the announcement.
Building on prior defence contracts
The company said it is advancing its technological capabilities as it adapts to global requirements in the artillery segment.
Having previously secured contracts for 155mm fuzes and M107 artillery shell bodies, Sigma is now moving into more advanced base bleed shells that integrate aerodynamics, energetics, propulsion-related technologies, and systems engineering into the projectile — part of what the company described as a deliberate strategy to move up the value chain in artillery ammunition.
Base bleed shells differ from conventional artillery shells in that they carry a gas-generating unit at the rear of the projectile.
This reduces aerodynamic drag at the base of the shell during flight, extending its effective range while remaining compatible with existing 155mm artillery platforms already in service globally.
Margin-accretive order seen strengthening export credentials
Sigma said the order is expected to be margin accretive and to support an improvement in the company’s overall profitability.
The company added that, beyond its commercial value, the contract strengthens its credentials as an export-qualified manufacturer in the international artillery ammunition supply chain and could serve as a reference programme as it builds relationships with new overseas customers and partners.
