Reliance Industries has had a busy week, but its share price hasn’t given investors much to celebrate. Jio Platforms made a strong stock market debut on Wednesday, October 28. By Friday morning, however, the parent company’s stock was hovering near its lowest level in a year.
At around 11 am on October 30, Reliance Industries shares were trading at ₹1,162.50, down 0.5%. Earlier, the stock had touched ₹1,157.35, barely above its 52-week low of ₹1,152.30.
The weakness comes ahead of Reliance’s September-quarter results, which are due later on Friday. Analysts expect a recovery in refining earnings, while Jio’s telecom business could provide further support. Retail, meanwhile, may have a more difficult quarter.
The market has plenty to digest. Reliance is preparing to publish its financial numbers, Jio is reporting for the first time since listing, and the board will consider another fundraising proposal.
Reliance Stock Remains Under Pressure Despite Jio Listing
Jio Platforms entered the stock exchanges at ₹1,358 per share on October 28, a premium of 21.36% over its issue price of ₹1,119.
It was a substantial debut for the digital services company. The listing also made Jio India’s second-most valuable listed business.
Yet the enthusiasm surrounding Jio didn’t translate into gains for Reliance Industries.
The Jio Platforms share price was down about 1% at ₹1,410.35 on Friday morning. Its market capitalisation slipped below ₹13 lakh crore to approximately ₹12.98 lakh crore.
Reliance itself has had a difficult year. Reuters reported that the stock had declined about 26% in 2026, compared with a roughly 12% fall in the Nifty 50.
The difference is notable for a company with interests spanning oil refining, petrochemicals, telecommunications, retail and renewable energy.
Investors have been concerned about retail valuations, the discount applied to Reliance’s holding-company structure and the time its newer energy businesses may need to generate meaningful returns.
Refining Margins Could Give Quarterly Profit a Boost
For the September quarter, market expectations are considerably stronger than Reliance’s recent share-price performance.
Bloomberg consensus estimates cited by Moneycontrol put consolidated profit at approximately ₹21,368 crore, compared with ₹20,946 crore in the June quarter.
The Reliance Industries Q2 FY27 results are expected to benefit mainly from improved refining conditions.
Reliance operates one of the world’s largest refining complexes at Jamnagar. Its oil-to-chemicals division processes crude oil and produces fuels, petrochemicals and other products.
Refining margins have strengthened as global fuel supplies tightened and demand for products such as diesel remained firm.
Kotak Institutional Equities expects operating profit from the oil-to-chemicals segment to increase 47% from a year earlier. The brokerage has pointed to stronger refinery earnings, access to lower-cost US ethane and currency-related benefits.
Nomura analyst Bineet Banka also expects higher refinery utilisation to help profitability.
The oil-to-chemicals business remains a major contributor to Reliance’s revenue, making its performance particularly important for consolidated earnings.
Still, higher crude prices can increase operating costs. The final benefit depends on product margins, feedstock expenses and the volumes processed during the quarter.
Jio Prepares for Its First Earnings Report as a Listed Company
Friday’s financial announcement will be particularly important for Jio.
Until this week, investors primarily assessed the digital business through Reliance’s consolidated financial statements. Jio’s listing has changed that, giving the company its own publicly traded shares and market valuation.
Analysts expect subscriber additions and higher revenue per user to support the Jio Platforms Q2 results.
The amount and borrowing terms have not yet been announced.
There has also been speculation about a possible dividend, bonus issue or stock split ahead of Diwali. However, Reliance’s regulatory filing does not mention any such proposal for the October 30 meeting.
Its last bonus issue took place in October 2024 at a 1:1 ratio.
Retail Could Be the Weak Spot This Quarter
Refining and telecom are likely to be earnings supports while Reliance Retail has a less positive outlook.
Sales growth is expected by brokerages, but operating margins are expected to stay under pressure for some.
Yes Securities estimates Reliance Retail revenue at Rs 92,700 crore with EBITDA margin of around 7 percent
Kotak Securities expects revenue to grow 11.7% y-o-y but expects a marginal decline in operating profit.
The pressure partly reflects the increasing contribution of lower-margin retail activities including quick-commerce deliveries.
That doesn’t necessarily indicate weak customer demand. Retail businesses can record higher sales without a corresponding increase in earnings when operating costs or product mixes change.
For Reliance, the retail division’s profitability will be worth examining alongside its revenue growth.
Market Awaits the Numbers Behind the Expectations
Friday’s announcement arrives at an unusual moment for Reliance.
Jio has achieved a high-profile listing, refining profitability is expected to improve, and telecom operations continue to expand. Yet the parent company’s shares remain close to their yearly low.
The Reliance Industries quarterly earnings will help establish whether improved refining margins and digital services income are sufficient to offset pressure elsewhere in the business.
Investors will also examine retail profitability, operating expenses and any further details of the proposed fundraising.
For Jio, the first post-listing results will provide an early financial test of its market valuation.
The figures available before the announcement are still estimates. Reliance’s reported numbers, rather than the forecasts circulating ahead of Friday’s board meeting, will determine how the quarter actually unfolded.
