It was tragic news for fans across Tamil Nadu when iconic actor and politician Vijayakant breathed his last on December 28th. According to reports, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder and leader had been hospitalized days prior after testing positive for COVID-19. The 71 year old actor, affectionately known as ‘Captain’ by his legion of loyal supporters, was placed on ventilator support due to worsening pneumonia.

Politician Vijayakant

Vijayakant had only recently returned to public life after multiple health scares over the past few years. His diabetes condition had become serious enough to require amputation of his toes earlier in 2022. He also had a history of organ transplant surgery undergone abroad. Despite various ongoing medical issues, the actor bravely continued leading his party and maintained an active presence in state politics.

On December 13th, Vijayakant attended a major DMDK general council meeting in Thiruverkadu in spite of his fragile physical condition. Helped by aides, he addressed cadres from a wheelchair for about half an hour. In a poignant symbolic move, the party unanimously appointed his devoted wife and treasurer Premalatha Vijayakant as the new general secretary, recognizing her as his political heir.

Sadly, this proved to be one of Vijayakant’s final public appearances. Within two weeks, his health took a turn for the worse when he contracted COVID-19 and developed pneumonia as a complication. Despite valiant efforts by doctors at a private Chennai hospital, the much loved actor-politician passed away on the morning of December 28th.

The news triggered an outpouring of grief across Tamil Nadu, with mourners flocking to pay last respects at Vijayakant’s residence. Leaders cutting across party lines conveyed their condolences, acknowledging his significant contributions through decades entertaining audiences and later championing the common man’s rights via his political platform.

Vijayakant emerged from humble beginnings to become a globally renowned Tamil cinema icon, best remembered for powerful portrayals symbolizing the struggles of everyday working class heroes. His charismatic screen presence and down to earth persona won him the status of a true demi-god among fans. Even in his final days, the Captain remained committed to serving the people, leaving a rich legacy that will inspire Tamils for generations to come. He was laid to rest with full state honors at his hometown of Chennai later that day.

Vijayakant’s contributions will remain forever etched in people’s memories and continue to inspire new generations in the state. His passing away at the young age of 71 feels nothing short of irreplaceable loss both to fans and the political realm in Tamil Nadu that he energized for decades with his charisma and advocacy for the underprivileged.
