A Japanese firm, Yokohama Rubber Company, has announced intentions to increase its production of passenger vehicle tyres in India.

Japanese rubber manufacturer Yokohama has been around since 1917. Since then, it has become a leading brand among its rivals. The first tyre manufacturer to gain ISO9001 accreditation is Yokohama, which is recognised as a model firm for quality assurance in design, research, production, installation, and associated services.

Our research and development centre in Cornelius, North Carolina, contributes significantly to the 2,100-person workforce we have in the USA. The firm has manufacturing facilities in West Point, Mississippi, and Salem, Virginia. 3 million tyres are produced by Yokohama every year for both personal and business use.

Through Yokohama India, the business plans to spend 671 crore rupees ($80 million) in increasing its annual tyre manufacturing capacity in the Indian market.

Yokohama India has been in business since 2007 and specialises in producing tyres that are tailored for Indian road conditions. The business intends to add extra capacity to its current Indian factory in Visakhapatnam. The additional production line will concentrate on producing 22-inch passenger vehicle tyres and is anticipated to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The annual manufacturing capacity of Yokohama has increased significantly, rising from 700,000 tyres in 2014 to 1.53 million tyres in 2019 and 1.96 million tyres in 2021. Additionally, the business can already produce 2.8 million tyres annually at its Bahadurgarh, Haryana, factory.

For the manufacture of off-road tyres, Yokohama maintains three production sites in Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and Dahej (Gujarat).

The tyre manufacturer recently opened its 51st shop in Salem, increasing its retail footprint in Tamil Nadu. This location provides a complete showroom for the whole Yokohama product line, which includes SUVs and passenger vehicle tyres. Wheel alignment and wheel balancing are among the other tyre-related services provided by the brand’s YIN dealership locations.
