IDBI Bank shares extended their rally for a fifth consecutive session on Wednesday, climbing 5% during intraday trade amid heavy activity on the exchanges.
The stock reached ₹92.39 on the BSE, taking its five-session gain to approximately 14.5%. At 11:12 am, it was trading 4.6% higher at ₹92.22, compared with a 0.18% rise in the Sensex.
About 16.79 million IDBI Bank shares had changed hands across the BSE and NSE by that point, placing the lender among the most actively traded banking stocks of the session.
The rise followed a clarification issued by IDBI Bank after the exchange sought information about the increase in trading volumes. The bank said it had disclosed all material developments and was not aware of any unpublished price-sensitive information or impending announcement requiring disclosure.
IDBI Bank added that it would continue reporting material events in accordance with the disclosure requirements applicable to listed companies.
Bank Says No Undisclosed Information Behind Rally
The exchange clarification came after a sharp increase in both the share price and trading activity.
IDBI Bank said it had promptly informed the exchanges of events that could affect its operations or financial performance. It specifically stated that no undisclosed development was pending at the time of its response.
The bank also referred to its ongoing strategic disinvestment process, noting that it is being handled by the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management. IDBI Bank said it has made the required disclosures whenever developments connected with the transaction have occurred.
The clarification did not stop the rally on Wednesday. The stock opened higher and continued gaining during the morning session as trading volumes expanded.
Despite the recent advance, IDBI Bank remained below its 52-week high of ₹118.45, recorded on January 5, 2026. At Wednesday’s intraday peak of ₹92.39, the stock was still approximately 22% below that level.
The five-day move followed a period of subdued trading. The sudden rise prompted the exchange to seek confirmation on whether any material corporate announcement was driving the price.
The bank’s response indicated that the movement was market-led rather than linked to undisclosed company information.
Asset Quality Has Improved
Alongside the ownership process, IDBI Bank’s improving financial position has provided support to the stock.
Crisil Ratings reaffirmed its ratings on the lender’s debt instruments on August 20. The rating agency maintained the relevant long-term ratings at CRISIL AA+ and CRISIL AA with a stable outlook, along with a CRISIL A1+ short-term rating.
The assessment reflected continued improvement in asset quality, healthy profitability, a stable deposit base and adequate capitalisation.
IDBI Bank’s gross non-performing asset ratio stood at 2.3% as of June 30, 2026. It was unchanged from March 2026 and lower than the 3% reported at the end of March 2025.
The net NPA ratio remained at 0.2%, indicating that provisions covered most of the bank’s stressed assets.
Loan slippages have also declined. Slippages as a percentage of opening gross advances stood at an annualised 0.71% during the first quarter of FY27, compared with 0.76% in FY26 and 0.98% in FY25.
Special mention accounts in the SMA-1 and SMA-2 categories totalled ₹2,515 crore at the end of June. This represented around 0.95% of gross advances.
These accounts are not classified as non-performing but have shown early signs of repayment stress. Their movement will remain relevant as the bank expands its loan book.
Crisil noted that IDBI Bank had made steady progress on asset quality and profitability. It also factored in expected financial support from LIC and the government until the ownership transition is completed.
The rating agency said the lender’s performance would continue to depend on maintaining asset quality while increasing advances.
What the Market Will Watch
The immediate focus will remain on whether the share price can sustain its recent gains after rising 14.5% in five sessions.
Trading volume will be another closely watched indicator. Wednesday’s turnover was significantly higher than normal, showing that the rally had attracted broad market participation.
Any official disclosure connected with the stake-sale process could trigger further movement. In the absence of a confirmed announcement, however, IDBI Bank’s latest exchange statement remains the company’s formal position: it has no undisclosed price-sensitive information to report.
The bank’s quarterly performance will also matter. Investors will track credit growth, margins, deposit mobilisation and the movement of stressed accounts in the coming results.
Takeaway
IDBI Bank stock climbed 5% to ₹92.39 during Wednesday’s session, extending its five-day rise to 14.5%. Nearly 16.79 million shares changed hands across the exchanges during morning trade.
The bank said there was no undisclosed price-sensitive information behind the increase and confirmed that it had met its material disclosure requirements.
While the ownership transition remains an important factor, improving asset quality and stable credit ratings provide the financial backdrop to the latest rally. The next major trigger will depend on confirmed disclosures regarding the stake sale or fresh operating results from the bank.
