DFF’s Major Investment in AI, Healthcare, and Smart Cities

The Dubai Future Foundation, or DFF, has announced the financing of 24 research projects in 13 universities under the Dubai Research, Development & Innovation Grant Initiative. This is considered to be one of the most mammoth initiatives of its kind in Dubai and is intended to put the city on the map as an international nexus of scientific and technological advances.

The grant mainly focuses on cognitive cities, healthcare, and life sciences, with special emphasis on artificial intelligence and robotics. Under a highly competitive selection process, 24 projects were selected from a total of 374 proposals submitted by 41 universities and institutes in Dubai. The initiative has generated great interest in Dubai’s innovation ecosystem.

Key Players and Their Contributions

Speaking for DFF, Khalifa Al Qama, Executive Director of Dubai Future Labs, said that the initiative bears testament to Dubai’s relentless efforts in the promotion of advanced research and development. Leading contributors, including University of Dubai, Canadian University Dubai, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and University of Wollongong in Dubai, are working to develop solutions in AI, healthcare, and sustainability.

Notable Projects

Several projects funded under the initiative highlight Dubai’s ambitions in AI and next-gen technologies:

  • AI-Powered Manufacturing Solutions for SMEs

The project led by Dr. Sreejith Balasubramanian of Middlesex University Dubai aims to use AI and digital twin technology to provide cost-effective and sustainable manufacturing solutions for small and medium enterprises.

  • Early Alzheimer’s Detection via AI

Dr. Hamzah Alkhazaleh from the University of Dubai leads GAP-AD, a research initiative making use of graphene-based biosensors, deep-learning models, and metaverse-enabled diagnostics for early Alzheimer’s detection. He pointed to the changes that AI is likely to bring to the revival of healthcare technologies.

  • AI-Driven Electric Vehicle Ecosystems

Professor Mai ElBarachi from the University of Wollongong in Dubai is leading ChatEV, a project to develop Generative AI, Large Language Models, and agentic AI to optimize electric vehicle (EV) ecosystems. The project dovetails with UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy toward energy efficiency enhancement by improving EV user satisfaction.
