Apple hasn’t said a word yet, but the internet already has. Prototype images of the iPhone 18 Pro Max are circulating online, and they point to what could be the most visible design change Apple has made to its flagship since the Dynamic Island debuted in 2022 — a significantly smaller pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen.
Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max Leaks
An alleged prototype image of the iPhone 18 Pro appears to confirm months of rumours: Apple is significantly shrinking the Dynamic Island for the first time since the feature was introduced. The prototype shows a noticeably smaller pill-shaped cutout, corroborating earlier dummy unit leaks suggesting a reduction of roughly 25 to 35 percent compared to the iPhone 17 Pro.
The engineering behind it is more interesting than the cosmetics. According to supply chain sources, Apple plans to move the Face ID flood illuminator beneath the display while keeping the dot projector, infrared camera, and selfie camera in a reduced but still-present pill cutout. The most frequently cited target width is around 13.5mm, down from approximately 20.7mm on current models — a reduction of around 35%.
The credibility of these leaks is higher than usual. Rumours have picked up sharply in late 2025 and early 2026, with differently-sourced signals converging — and when that happens ahead of a new iPhone launch, those rumours tend to be accurate. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and display analyst Ross Young have both backed the claim.
Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max Features: Battery, Camera, and A20 Chip
The Dynamic Island shrink isn’t the only upgrade tipped for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Battery life is expected to jump significantly, with leakers reporting a capacity of 5,100–5,200 mAh — the largest ever in an iPhone — with projections of up to 40 hours of mixed use on a single charge. The phone is also tipped to get a variable aperture main camera, allowing mechanical adjustment of the lens opening for better control over depth of field and low-light performance — a first for iPhone.
Under the hood, Apple is expected to ship its first 2nm A20 Pro chip, with pricing likely holding steady at $999 for the Pro and $1,199 for the Pro Max.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to debut in September 2026, alongside Apple’s long-rumoured first foldable iPhone.
Why It Matters: Apple Is on a Roll
The anticipation comes on the back of staggering financial momentum. Apple posted revenue of $143.8 billion for Q1 FY2026, up 16% year-on-year, driven by a 23% surge in iPhone sales to $85.27 billion — the product’s best quarter ever. The most recent March quarter also set records, with revenue of $111.2 billion, up 17%, and iPhone contributing $56.99 billion. Apple’s active installed base now stands at over 2.5 billion devices worldwide, with a market capitalization of $3.62 trillion.
With numbers like those, Apple can afford to be cautious with its design changes. But if the leaks hold, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may offer the most compelling reason to upgrade in years — not through a dramatic reinvention, but through quietly reclaiming screen space one millimetre at a time.
