JioCinema, a popular streaming platform in India, which recently streamed the FIFA World Cup 2022 and is currently streaming Tata IPL 2023, may soon begin to charge a subscription fee. Reports suggest that the platform will offer three subscription plans named Gold, Daily, and Platinum. Screenshots of the plans were allegedly shared on Reddit, showing that the platform will offer a range of benefits to its subscribers.

The Daily Delight plan is said to be priced at ₹29 and will allow users to stream content on two different devices simultaneously for a one-day validity period. The Gold Standard plan will likely be priced at ₹299 and offer a three-month validity period and support for two devices. It may also be offered at an introductory price of ₹99. Finally, the Platinum Power plan, which is the top-tier plan, will be priced at ₹599 and offer ad-free streaming for 365 days, along with support for up to four devices.

JioCinema, a platform under the ownership of Viacom18, headed by Mukesh Ambani, has recently enlisted the services of Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, as their ambassador. Collaborating with the JioCinema team, Sharma will help expand the platform’s fan base by introducing its digital-first idea for all premium sporting events, thereby bringing the experience of watching sports closer to the digital age. Known for its vast collection of Indian films, television shows, and diverse international content, JioCinema is currently offered as a free service to its users.

The platform is currently in a state of ambiguity regarding the implementation of subscription plans. Nonetheless, this move is consistent with other notable OTT platforms present in India, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The burgeoning OTT industry in India has witnessed an unprecedented surge in recent years with a multitude of companies, including Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, and SonyLIV, venturing into the market.

Given the platform’s unwavering efforts in augmenting its content repository and unveiling innovative features, the announcement of subscription plans on JioCinema was hardly unexpected. The reception to these proposals and the extent to which users are willing to shell out for them remains to be seen. Notwithstanding, the platform’s immense popularity and its extensive gamut of content are likely to retain a considerable chunk of its users, even after the subscription plans are rolled out.
