The efficacy of guidance is not something that our society talks about often. Guiding someone or others to achieve goals in life is no less than holistic welfare for humankind. And mentoring in education could equate to saving lives, enriching their existence, uplifting them, and inspiring them. Today’s piece highlights the passion and expertise of a phenomenal leader whose monumental 24 years of industry experience have transformed the education sector into one that strives for operational excellence.
Dr. Laura Jumbam-Viban has been the director of the American International School of Brazzaville (AISB) for the past seven years. Her career spans across continents: Africa, Europe, and the United States. She is the “transformational leader” who honed data-driven strategies to scale AISB, which has maintained a 100% university acceptance rate. Under Dr. Laura’s tenure, AISB has grown to become the only International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in the country, securing the full IB continuum, which is the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP).
While discussing with Dr. Laura, we can decipher that it hasn’t just been about success. But benchmarks were crossed and inspiration was cultivated because Dr. Laura is highly committed to her job. Her strategic decision-making has spearheaded and transformed global pedagogical mandates into value-driven metrics in the education industry. Under the leadership of Dr. Laura, AISB was named the “Outstanding International School of the Year in Africa.” Furthermore, AISB graduates have secured placements at prestigious universities across the USA, UK, Canada, and the globe. Dr. Laura reflects on the success trajectory of AISB, where the Class of 2026 alone has secured over $1.8 million in scholarships to support their higher education.
The educational institution is championing the “Global Agency” approach through the “Destination Classroom” initiative. This is one of Dr. Laura’s innovative approaches to scaling educational guidance beyond the four walls of a classroom. Under this spectrum are Elite Diplomatic Engagements, which is student participation in Model United Nations (MUN) at world-renowned institutions, including Harvard, Yale, UCLA, Dubai, and the Oxford United Nations Conference (November 2025); Leadership Training, which is engaged in the enrollment in Future Leaders Programs for perfecting communication skills for best industry practices; and Global Learning Expeditions, which involves specialized academic missions to the United States and Singapore (January 2026) to cultivate the knack towards blending critical thinking with a global mindset.
Dr. Laura Viban believes that every industry that we know today is evolving, and it is crucial for the AISB to excel in the mechanics of institutional innovation to ensure the school’s growth and scalability. Apart from ensuring a robust pedagogical standard, Dr. Laura has also associated AISB with the Middle States Association (MSA). This collaboration led to instrumental impact in initial accreditation, which solidified AISB’s stance as a premier educational institution. The historic partnership was rewarded with a 7-year re-accreditation and mid-term report success, which ensured consistent institutional growth.
The academic achievements of Dr. Laura Viban played a pivotal role in succeeding in her current role as the director of AISB.
