The BCCI decided to auction the media rights first for the first time because it will allow potential club owners to figure out their business model based on predicted revenues from the media rights transaction.

NEW DELHI — Viacom18, controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd., has secured the media rights to the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) for the next five years for 951 crore. The corporation would pay 7.09 crore each match for 2023-27, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

BCCI secretary Jay Shah hailed the network and called it a “major win for women’s cricket” in a tweet.

The five clubs for the inaugural Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) season are anticipated to be revealed on January 25.

The Mumbai Indians, owned by Reliance, as well as the franchise owners of the Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans, have expressed interest in bidding for the teams, and the inaugural season is expected to begin in early March.

The BCCI decided to auction the media rights first for the first time because it will allow potential club owners to figure out their business model based on predicted revenues from the media rights transaction. The BCCI will split 80% of the earnings from broadcast rights and ground sponsorships equally among the five teams.

Its invitation to tender (ITT) was available for a non-refundable charge of around 5 lakh, excluding taxes. The ITT procurement method was available for purchase through the end of 2022, and it stated that only those who met the eligibility criteria outlined in the ITT and other terms and conditions would be eligible to bid. It went on to say that purchasing this ITT did not entitle any person to bid.
