Otis wins contract to upgrade elevators and escalators in Burj Khalifa

Otis, a leading elevator and escalator manufacturer, has signed a major contract with Emaar Properties to modernize many of the lifts and escalators within Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building located in Dubai.

Burj Khalifa stands at an incredible 828 meters tall and contains over 160 floors, so moving people efficiently within the building requires advanced vertical transportation systems. When the tower was first completed in 2010, Otis installed two double-decker elevators and escalators to transport visitors and residents.

For over a decade now, Otis technicians have maintained this equipment around the clock to ensure everything operates smoothly. With approximately 17 million people visiting Burj Khalifa annually, reliable elevator service is crucial. However, after 14 years the systems need upgrades to improve performance.

The new modernization contract awarded to Otis involves servicing 34 elevators out of the original 57 installed, as well as all eight escalators. Otis will replace key components like the elevator control systems with their latest technology. The existing Elevator Management System that monitors equipment will be upgraded to the next generation version for better remote monitoring capabilities.

This will allow building management to have real-time visibility of elevator traffic, wait times, and any issues requiring attention. The new controls are designed to optimize efficiency and reduce travel durations even further. For example, doors will open and close quicker to decrease time spent at each floor.

Otis stated they will draw on experiences modernizing other iconic structures to minimize disruption during the Burj Khalifa project. Major works will be carefully planned and carried out to avoid compromising elevator availability. Their highly trained technicians are accustomed to working on supertall skyscrapers and understand the complex logistical challenges.

The contract also includes a 10-year service agreement where Otis will continue routine maintenance and repairs after the modernization’s completion. Emaar Properties expressed confidence in Otis due to their past work installing the original systems, and look forward to enhanced services.

For Otis, winning such a prominent job is a source of pride as they have supported Burj Khalifa’s operations since day one. Upgrading critical infrastructure within the world’s tallest building showcases their expertise in vertical transport solutions. It demonstrates the trust placed in Otis to reliably transport millions of visitors to the observation decks each year.

With the modernized elevators and escalators, Burj Khalifa residents and tourists can expect even smoother, faster and more efficient journeys throughout the towering structure. Otis’ technologies will help the iconic landmark maintain its world-leading status for many more years to come.
