The Premium subscription that allows users to access material from companies like HBO and Warner Bros. will cost Rs 999 for a full year on JioCinema.com. Ambani is thus leveraging the success of the IPL to promote content and ultimately unveil the pricing strategy for a country with 1.4 billion inhabitants who are passionate about both films and cricket.

JioCinema, owned by Ambani, will now require a premium membership

In order to move away from providing all material for free via the app, India’s most prominent OTT platform JioCinema, owned by billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani, has launched a Premium membership service.

The Premium subscription that allows users to access material from companies like HBO and Warner Bros. will cost Rs 999 for a full year on JioCinema.com.

While the official digital streaming partner of the richest cricket league in the world continues to offer free streaming of the IPL, which is breaking several viewership records this year, ET Online reported in April that Reliance-owned JioCinema may likely start charging you for its content after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League.

IPL streaming is still free this year, and select Bollywood films, like the most recent addition Vikram Vedha, are as well.

By signing a multi-year, multi-million dollar content agreement with Warner Bros Discovery in late April, Viacom18 made it possible for JioCinema to stream HBO, Max Original, and Warner Bros material in India.

The introduction of the subscription model also contrasts with JioCinema’s record-breaking digital viewership for the IPL, despite the fact that JioCinema also provided free access to the FIFA World Cup the previous year.

Jyoti Deshpande, the president of Reliance’s media and content business, told Bloomberg in an interview that JioCinema, owned by Viacom18, expects to add more than 100 films and TV shows to its platform.

Ambani is thus leveraging the success of the IPL to promote content and ultimately unveil the pricing strategy for a country with 1.4 billion inhabitants who are passionate about both films and cricket. He also aspires to compete with the world’s titans in online streaming and worldwide media.

The IPL was being streamed on an OTT site by Asia’s richest entrepreneur Ambani, who wasn’t trying to attract all fans, according to experts. While his flagship telecom business draws users from Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel and the financially troubled Vodafone Idea, he is eager to establish a commanding position for consumer super-apps.

Ambani is reportedly on the verge of putting Jio Platforms on stock exchanges.

JioCinema will stream a variety of programs via the subscription model, including Fatal Attraction, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones. In addition, the subscription will provide fans access to films like the Wonder Woman and Batman v. Superman series, among others, and the Harry Potter film series.

Users can watch on any device and up to four devices at once with this 12-month subscription.
