Google AI training for teachers

India’s school and college educators can now access free training on using artificial intelligence responsibly in classrooms, Google announced at the Education World Forum 2026 in London on May 19. The tech giant is expanding its AI Educator Series (GES) to India, in collaboration with state governments and in partnership with UNICEF, to strengthen AI literacy among the country’s educators and students.

Free Gemini training, in your language

The Google AI Educator Series, which was first launched in the United States to provide free, comprehensive Gemini training to K-12 and higher education faculty, is now being expanded to India, offering educators across the country’s schools and higher education institutions training on how to use Google AI responsibly to improve learning experiences.

The training, developed in collaboration with the governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Assam, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Punjab School Education Board, is practical and mobile-first, and has been customised to the unique needs of Indian educators. To ensure broad accessibility, it will be fully localised into six Indian languages in its first year — Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi — beginning with select state pilots.

Who can apply?

The initiative is open to school teachers and higher education faculty members across India. Google has said it is actively seeking to expand the collaboration to more states, higher education institutions, and regulatory bodies. The programme aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on AI as a critical area for teacher training, enablement, and flexible learning across subjects.

A global partnership with UNICEF

Alongside the educator series, UNICEF, Google for Education, and Google.org are partnering on a first-of-its-kind initiative to support education innovation for students in India, as well as in Brazil, Pakistan, and Kenya, with the goal of addressing digital divides and unequal access to technology.

The initiative will focus on improving learning outcomes, particularly in literacy and numeracy, training educators, and building more reliable and accessible school systems. Over the next three years, UNICEF will work with local communities to build localised, scalable solutions — from training teachers to use Gemini and NotebookLM for personalised instruction, to utilising the India-first ReadAlong app to support learners’ foundational reading fluency and comprehension through guided practice.

In addition to funding the initiative through Google.org, Google will provide access to technology tools as well as technical support through ongoing product workshops and training for UNICEF staff, local government, and education leaders. UNICEF will compile annual impact reports to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of solutions deployed in each country.

These initiatives build on Google’s ongoing efforts to support India’s education ecosystem, which have included helping build India’s first AI-enabled state university and integrating Gemini into students’ learning and test-preparation journeys. Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund has also been expanded across the Asia-Pacific region to equip millions of students, teachers, and workers across 19 countries — including India — with AI skills. .
