The opening of the first department store in Kolkata, the Kalyan Colony Mall, in August 1997 was signified by a milestone in Biyani’s retail career. Initially, leasing and refurbishing a 10,000 square foot space, he carved a clear point on the growth track that prevented operations from having a breathing space of only three weeks during which he would set up two other stores in the market, achieving the expansion targets ahead of the deadline.
