The vast majority of those 100,000 new jobs have been created in the past 19 months since the PLI program was introduced in August 2021, according to the report.

Apple has created 100,000 direct jobs over the past 19 months, making it the leading job creator in the electronics industry, Business Standard reported.

The report says that Apple’s suppliers and component suppliers in India have helped create these jobs by supporting the production of iPhones through the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program.

reported that the vast majority of these 100,000 new jobs have been created in the past 19 months since the introduction of the PLI program in August 2021.

The three main vendors that assemble the iPhone – Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron, and Wistron – account for 60% of new jobs. This figure was about 7,000 more jobs than they had committed to in their second year under the program.

According to the report, the remaining 40% of jobs are created by the Apple ecosystem, which includes component and charger suppliers. Together, these suppliers, including companies such as Tata Electronics, Salcomp, Avary, Foxlink, Sunwoda, and Jabil, have created an additional 40,000 jobs.

employment figures are based on data provided by the three major iPhone vendors and companies in the Apple ecosystem are required to regularly report their employment figures to government authorities.

Foxconn Hon Hai, headquartered in Tamil Nadu, specializes in iPhone production, creating more than 35,500 jobs, more than a third of all jobs created. Pegatron, also in Tamil Nadu and which started production this fiscal year, was the second largest employer with 14,000 jobs, while Karnataka-based Wistron added 12,800 jobs.

Contacted by Business Standard (BS), a spokesperson for Apple Inc did not respond to questions regarding the service number. However, sources within the supply chain told the publication that Tata Electronics, a key component supplier for the mechanical parts used by Apple, employs a large number of workers.

Other major job creators would be Salcomp, which employs over 11,000 people, as well as Jabil, Foxlink, and Sunwoda.

According to a press release issued in October 2020, the PLI smartphone program is expected to create 200,000 direct jobs over five years.

The government also predicts that for every direct job created in electronics manufacturing, there are nearly three times as many indirect jobs. According to this estimate, the total number of direct and indirect jobs created in the Apple ecosystem would be around 300,000.

In addition, mobile device manufacturers and their suppliers have directly and indirectly created around 2 million jobs over the past seven years, according to estimates by the Cellular and Electronics Association of India.

In December 2022, Apple becomes the first company to surpass $1 billion in iPhone shipments in a single month. According to a report, the company exported iPhones worth more than Rs 3,000 crore between April 2022 and December 2022, accounting for about 40% of the country’s total smartphone exports during the same period.
