British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke with Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman about the dangers that AI poses, ranging from existential threats to disinformation and challenges to national security.

Following their Wednesday meeting, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the heads of the top AI Companies OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic pledged to collaborate to guarantee society benefits from the game-changing technology.

According to the statement, Sunak and the tech titans Sam Altman of OpenAI, Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind, and Dario Amodei of Anthropic explored the dangers that AI poses, ranging from deception and threats to national security to existential ones.

Additionally, they reviewed safety precautions, potential pathways for international cooperation on AI safety and regulation, and voluntary activities that laboratories are contemplating to control the dangers.

Britain announced in March that rather than setting up a new organization specifically for the technology, it will divide responsibility for regulating AI among its current authorities for human rights, health and safety, and competition.

Additionally, EU industry chief Thierry Breton stated on Wednesday that Alphabet and the European Commission sought to create an AI accord encompassing both European and non-European businesses before rules to regulate the technology.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, and Breton had previously met in Brussels.

“Sundar and I agreed that we cannot afford to wait until AI regulation actually becomes applicable, and to work together with all AI developers to already develop an AI pact on a voluntary basis ahead of the legal deadline,” said Breton in a statement following the meeting.

Additionally, he asked EU nations and legislators to complete the Commission’s proposed AI guidelines before the year’s end. Negotiations to resolve their disputes have not yet been initiated by either party.

According to EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager on Tuesday, the European Union and the United States intend to increase their cooperation in artificial intelligence in order to set baseline criteria before legislation becomes effective.
