Tabreed to set up Asia’s largest district cooling project in Hyderabad

Tabreed, a cooling service provider based in Abu Dhabi has recently announced investments of $200 million to develop a cooling infrastructure of 125,000 refrigeration tons (RT) for the Hyderabad Pharma City.

In collaboration, with the Telangana government, Tabreed (National Central Cooling Company) has entered into a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the establishment of this facility.

The leadership team from Tabreed held discussions with a delegation from the Telangana government in Abu Dhabi led by K T Rama Rao (IT and Industries Minister) and Jayesh Ranjan (Secretary IT and Industries Govt of Telangana).

This project is being undertaken as a partnership and aims to provide sustainable long-term cooling services through the innovative cooling-as-a-service model. It will cater to the process cooling and storage requirements of units.

The company asserts that their cost-effective model would lead to savings of 6,800 GWh of power and 41,600 mega liters of water. This would pave the way, for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by saving 6.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over the project’s lifetime.

Additionally, the Government of Telangana has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Tabreed to explore district cooling infrastructure in existing districts like Cyberabad and other mixed-use development areas. This initiative has the potential to reduce peak electricity demand by over 200 MW resulting in a CO2 reduction of 18 million tons over 30 years. Moreover, it will help mitigate the heat island effect and enhance Hyderabad’s reputation as one of Asia’s best cities for living and working.

“Our focus on cooling as an aspect through policies like roofs and energy-efficient district cooling systems contributes significantly to our ambitious vision of achieving net zero status, for Telangana by 2047 ” stated an official spokesperson.
