According to a corporate executive, Sony Group is strengthening its focus on the virtual production sector where it is experiencing market-beating growth thanks to the technological prowess of the Japanese entertainment conglomerate.

The company, which provides virtual production facilities to filmmakers and broadcasters, uses a wall of light-emitting diode (LED) screens to display pictures that are integrated into the scene while it is being shot, such as a science-fiction environment or an urban skyline.

The system’s benefits include more realistic reflections caused by light from the panels and greater immersion for actors on set as opposed to green screens, where digital effects are applied later.

Sony sees its competitive advantage as a result of its hardware prowess (the multinational firm manufactures everything from image sensors for cameras to enormous LED video walls) and filmmaking know-how as a significant participant in Hollywood.

Yasuharu Nomura, Sony’s head of virtual production, said in an interview, “It’s because we have the hardware that we can replicate in the virtual world.

Sony no longer produces hardware like movie cameras but has abandoned its faltering electronics division in favour of gaming, movies, and music in recent years. The business invests in Epic Games, whose Unreal Engine is used to create virtual worlds.

With an increasing share of sales anticipated to come from services, Sony claims its virtual production business is growing by about 35% yearly, faster than the total market.

The business is introducing better panels, cameras, and service options in addition to “volumetric capture,” which allows for the multi-angle recording of performances for virtual reality viewing.

Sony recently unveiled the WF-1000XM5 fully wireless earphones in India. The earphones may be pre-ordered starting today for a discounted price of Rs 24,990. The newest wireless earbuds from Sony make the claim to have the best noise-cancelling capabilities and superior music quality.

With the case, the buds’ battery life may be extended to 24 hours and they can play music for up to 8 hours. Both wireless Qi charging and quick wired charging over USB-C are supported. A short three minute charge can also provide an hour of music listening time.

A top corporate executive also stated that Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) had sold over 90% of its TV and digital ad inventory for the Asian Games 2023, with the network aiming for a reach of over 100 million.

“Whether it is linear or digital, we are practically sold out, and the list of advertisers is expanding. Rajesh Kaul, the head of business for sports at SPNI, said, “We sold the TV and digital ad inventory separately.
