Reportedly, the National Apprenticeship Mela by Skill India stood witness to more than 2,000 entities involved in various market segments including Retail, Telecom, Power, Electronics, Automotive, and so on, which took part in the event organized by Skill India.

On October 4, 2021, Skill India organized National Apprenticeship Mela backed by DGT (Directorate General of Training) together with the support of NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation). The latest launch of apprentice event was held across the nation in 400 locations.

The initiative under Skill India is introduced in order to skill over one lakh apprentices for cushioning the hiring process and helping employers in picking up the right talent they are looking for and further develop those apprentices’ potential with various training programmes and practicing skillset. 

Reportedly, the National Apprenticeship Mela by Skill India stood witness to more than 2,000 entities involved in various market segments including Retail, Telecom, Power, Electronics, Automotive, and so on, which took part in the event organized by Skill India. The fair offered Indian youth to participate in professional segments with more than 500 choices including Beautician, Electrician, Mechanic, Welder, etc. 

The Skill India apprenticeship fair aims at making apprentices eligible for suitable employment opportunities. However, many individuals are not familiar with what apprenticeship is and how is it going to benefit them. Let us look at the term more comprehensively.

What do you mean by apprenticeship?

Under the National Policy of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship program initiated by the country’s honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, apprenticeship means an initiative to provide skilled workers with suitable employment along with reasonable compensation.  In general terms, apprenticeship is a program or position in which an individual learns a particular trade by working under a qualified expert. 

The program is introduced with the motive of bridging the gap between demand and supply of eligible individuals, thereby supporting them to achieve their aspirational goals by offering on-job training and providing suitable employments opportunities. Our country’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has also contributed and undertaken several steps with the view of expanding the number of apprentices being hired by the employers in the nation. 

Who are eligible for applying at the Apprenticeship Mela?

Any student or individual who has passed Class 5 to the ones who have completed education till Class 12 are eligible for applying at the Apprenticeship Mela. Other individuals including those who hold skill training certificate, ones with diploma, ITI students, etc. can also avail the benefits of the initiative by Skill India. The candidates applying are required to have with them at 3 copies of their resume and the mark sheets as well as certificates for authentication of the qualification. In addition, they are also expected to have 3 passport size pictures at chosen venues. 

What are the benefits of the Apprenticeship Mela?

Skill India launched this initiative of National Apprenticeship Mela where eligible and potential candidates who applied for the participation will be granted numerous benefits. They are offered with on-spot selection for apprenticeship with opportunities of receiving chosen industry exposure and recognition. Post the hiring for apprenticeship, the apprentice will be given a monthly stipend according to government’s guidelines in order to induce them with newly developed skills while granting them opportunity to earn in the process of skill training. 

In addition, with the view of enhancing their resumes for future employment opportunities, candidates will be given certificates verified and backed by NCVET (National Council for Vocational Education and Training).

What is Skill India?

Skill India is a government programme launched on July 15, 2015 by our country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi which was initially introduced with an aim of training 40 crore people in the country with different skills by 2022. Skill India is operated and managed by National Skills Development Corporation of India. 

The programme has introduced various initiatives including National Skill Development Mission, National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, 2015, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna  (PMKVY), Skill Loan Scheme, and Rural India Skill.

Courses offered by Skill India scheme include:

  • Management and development courses- Financial statement analysis, marketing, etc.
  • Women Entrepreneurship schemes, CRR scheme, Women EDP, etc.
