According to figures from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a division of the Union Ministry of Power, Maharashtra has taken the lead in promoting electric cars (EVs), having the most public charging stations in the nation (2,354).
With 1,619 stations, Delhi is not far behind, while Karnataka has 736. There are 465 charging stations in Tamil Nadu, 449 in Uttar Pradesh, and 425 in Telangana, respectively.
Fast chargers that are available to the general public are mostly included in these statistics; private facilities or gated communities are not frequently included. For sluggish charging, AC chargers are used. High-capacity DC chargers are made to charge automobiles quickly, greatly lowering the time needed to charge an EV.
The EV Yatra webpage was introduced by President Droupadi Murmu in December 2022 to encourage the use of EVs. ” The EV Yatra web portal and mobile app support e-mobility around the country and provide e-vehicle navigation. On evyatra.beeindia.gov.in, all public charge point operators can register, whether they are private or public organisations. According to a BEE official, EV owners can quickly find public charging stations by searching based on states or routes, which allays their concerns about running out of range.
Out of the 34.59 crore automobiles nationwide, 26.8 lakh are electric vehicles. With 5.4 lakh electric vehicles, Uttar Pradesh is in first place, followed by Maharashtra (2.8 lakh), Karnataka (2.3 lakh), Delhi (2.2 lakh), and Tamil Nadu (1.6 lakh).
According to BEE data, there are 84 charge point operators and 8,735 operational public charging stations across India. These stations are owned by 27 public-sector enterprises (PSUs) and 57 private businesses.
The IOC and Bolt.Earth are leading the charge for EV adoption.
“We commissioned 3,310 EV charging stations and 37 battery-swapping stations in fiscal year 2022-2023 alone, bringing the total number of charging stations to 5,452 and 69 battery-swapping stations,” an IndianOil spokeswoman told Moneycontrol. When compared to PSUs, this equals a 72% market share.
The private sector has installed 4,965 charging stations. Bolt is a start-up situated in Bengaluru. Due to its 1,723 charging stations, Earth has become the dominant private operator. REVOS (1,228), Tata Power (1,077), Kazam (502), Fortum Charge and Drive India (100), and Ather (93), which are all not far behind, are in second place.
According to experts, a number of factors, including the prevalence of e-rickshaws in places like Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, the favourable EV policies in states like Maharashtra, the existence of e-mobility firms and start-ups in states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the rise in the use of battery-powered vehicles by delivery personnel, rising fuel prices, the expansion of charging stations, and the introduction of more accessible and diverse battery-powered vehicle models, all contribute to the growth of EVs.
Delhi, Haryana, UP, and Delhi are leading the way
The most extensive EV policies in India are found in Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, according to a recent report by Climate Trends, a research-based consultancy and capacity-building effort. The study is titled “Analysis of State Electric Vehicle Policies and Their Impact.”
These states are the most comprehensive in terms of encouraging the adoption of EVs, the report claims, because they have a wide range of characteristics in their laws. The report shows that none of India’s states are on track to reach their goals for charging infrastructure.
The report also emphasises the value of the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles (EVs) and proposes that state EV policies could hasten the growth of this sector by requiring the installation of EV charging stations in all new and existing urban structures, including shopping malls, hospitals, parking lots, office buildings, and apartment buildings.
Overall, the study emphasises the need for comprehensive policies that address a variety of characteristics, provide demand-side incentives, draw in investments, and give priority to the creation of charging infrastructure to encourage the growth of EVs in India.
