IIT Bombay receives 160 crore from anonymous donor

In a remarkable display of philanthropy, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay has been granted an astonishing donation of Rs 160 crore by an anonymous benefactor.

This uncommon act in the realm of Indian academia has brought to light the donor’s desire for anonymity, as highlighted by Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the Director of IIT Bombay. The purpose behind this substantial contribution is to establish a Green Energy and Sustainability Research Hub, an initiative that the esteemed institute unveiled on Thursday.

Professor Chaudhuri further underscored the significance of this hub, emphasizing the institute’s unwavering commitment to addressing climate-related challenges through cutting-edge research, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and nurturing entrepreneurial ventures.

This hub will find its home within a state-of-the-art academic building nestled within the sprawling campus of IIT Bombay in the suburban locale of Powai, Mumbai. Its scope will house a range of critically important domains, as conveyed by the institute through a statement issued by a news agency.

This magnanimous contribution follows closely after another substantial act of generosity. Just a month prior, Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and an alumnus of IIT-Bombay, contributed a staggering sum of Rs 315 crore to commemorate his 50-year association with the institution.

Nilekani’s connection with IIT Bombay dates back to 1973 when he embarked on his journey with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. The iconic main building of IIT Bombay now proudly bears his name in recognition of his significant contributions. Nilekani’s dedication to his alma mater is truly commendable, with a total commitment of Rs 400 crore, including previous grants of Rs 85 crore.

In the realm of rankings, IIT Bombay witnessed a slight shift in its position. According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework by the Ministry of Education, the institute slipped a notch in the rankings for India’s educational institutions in 2023, as published in June.

However, there is also a positive note to highlight—the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings saw IIT Bombay ascending from the 177th position last year to an impressive 149th spot this year. Garnering an overall score of 51.7 out of 100, this premier institute continues to make its mark on the global stage. The official list was unveiled this June, offering insights into the institute’s standing.
