In line with India’s Semiconductor Mission, Gujarat became the first state to implement a semiconductor policy in 2022, with several companies from Japan, South Korea, New Delhi, and Bengaluru expressing interest in investing in the sector during events planned ahead of the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, officials said.

According to a government announcement, the state’s semiconductor strategy seeks to play a key part in the global realignment of supply chains in the strategic sector, as well as to strengthen India’s economic position.

Micron Technology’s decision to build a $2.75 billion factory in Sanand, near Ahmedabad, demonstrates that Gujarat’s dedicated semiconductor strategy is showing fruit and luring global companies, according to the company. Gujarat unveiled a special strategy in July last year to attract new investments in the semiconductor industry by giving incentives and subsidies to start operations in the state.

According to the statement, the government has utilized roadshows and delegation visits organized ahead of the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit to highlight its commitment to the sector’s development. Several firms from Japan, South Korea, New Delhi, and Bengaluru have shown interest in the state’s industry. According to the report, “These companies have shown their enthusiasm towards the research and development in semiconductor industries, assembly testing, packaging, and the manufacturing of critical components which are valuable for the semiconductor industry along with developing engineering/technology centers.

It said that follow-up conversations with foreign and local corporations are ongoing to establish more large-scale projects in Gujarat. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has attributed the state’s dedication to the semiconductor sector to the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. Patel said that there was a lot of interest in semiconductor technology during his remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for Micron Technology’s factory in Sanand, near Ahmedabad, in September. “Today marks the historic opening of the Micron factory in Sanand. “This historic day will be remembered for propelling Sanand and Gujarat to new heights,” he said.

During a pre-Vibrant Gujarat summit event in New Delhi, the chief minister said that the state has emerged as the “most preferred destination” for developing semiconductors and display fabs. The semiconductor strategy, which will be in effect until 2027, intends to create over 200,000 job opportunities over the following five years. According to the statement, the policy was established by the Centre’s ‘India Semiconductor Mission’ to attract and encourage new projects in the industry, and it was methodically constructed to facilitate and boost manufacturing operations in Gujarat.

Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has also praised the state’s dedication to the semiconductor industry. “Narendra Modiji passed a policy in January 2023, so we have large units and plants coming up in Gujarat, such as Micron.

More than 30 design startups have emerged. “We intend to establish a new Indian semiconductor research center focused on research,” the Union minister said. Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra previously said that the business is happy to represent its commitment to developing a semiconductor assembly and test facility for memory in Gujarat and that this is the nation’s first big semiconductor industry investment. Our team here in Gujarat will transform DRAM and NAND products into finished component packages, memory modules, and solid-state storage drives ready to ship to end customers in India and around the world,” Mehrotra said in July at SemiconIndia 2023 in Gandhinagar.
