Pune-based Deep-tech startup Astrophel Aerospace has raised ₹6.84 crore (about $800k) pre-seed funding from a number of angel investors and venture capitalists. This is the company’s first external investment since its inception in 2022.
Astrophel will use the money to prototype its reusable semi-cryogenic launch vehicle and also to build up its internal research and development (R&D). The focus will be on creating advanced rocket engines and guidance systems that will be capable of launching small satellites.
What the Company Does
Astrophel Aerospace, founded by Suyash Bafna, is located in Pune and is dedicated to creating low-cost reusable rockets. The rockets are designed to put small satellites into low earth orbit, which is an important growing demand in India and around the world.
The startup uses a vertically integrated model, whereas most others use separate suppliers. They design, build and test everything, from the rocket engines to the guidance systems. This gives more control over quality and speed to market.
Technology and Accomplishments
Astrophel is developing the Astra C1 series of rockets, which use the company’s own semi-cryogenic engines. These rockets are built using a combination of 3D printing and modular assembly, which brings down costs and simplifies repair or upgrades.
The organization also claims to be one of the few private firms in India to develop and test fire a semi-cryogenic engine. And what is remarkable, they accomplished this using only ₹6 lakh of internal funding and no external investment.
Presently, Astrophel’s main engine is called Potentia C1U. This engine is being manufactured using modular manufacturing techniques, similar to what is done in the automotive industry. These techniques can help with proper scaling.
Support from ISRO
Astrophel has partnered with ISRO by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the company with co-development and testing and allow Astrophel access to invaluable knowledge and infrastructures. The startup plans to develop and test a fully functional reusable rocket prototype within the next 2 to 3 years.
Growing in a Competitive Market
India’s private space industry is developing quickly. Astrophel Group joins other members of this market including Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul cosmos, Bellatrix Aerospace, and Pixxel. It has a strong place in this market by focusing on reusable technology, cost effectiveness, and in-house development.
With ₹6.84 crore in pre-seed funding, Astrophel Aerospace is primed to shake up India’s private space sector. Focusing on reusable and low-cost rockets, as well as in-house development of launch systems, Astrophel Aerospace is developing technology for small-satellite launch systems. With support from ISRO and a focus on innovation, Astrophel Aerospace is emerging as a promising player in the global space-tech ecosystem.
