In this light, the work of exceptional physicians like Dr. Tinku Joseph shines brightly as a beacon of hope, showcasing not only the brilliance of medical practice but also the profound impact of compassionate care.
Dr. Tinku Joseph, Professor and Head of Interventional Pulmonology at the renowned Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of pulmonology in India. Over his distinguished career spanning more than 15 years, he has transformed the landscape of respiratory healthcare in the country, earning a reputation as one of the foremost experts in interventional pulmonology.
Through his vision and leadership, Dr. Joseph has helped establish India as a global hub for advanced pulmonology procedures. His efforts have been instrumental in expanding the number of centers capable of performing complex pulmonology interventions from just three to nearly fifty. As the founder of the Amrita Bronchology & Interventional Pulmonology (ABIP), Dr. Joseph has created a legacy of excellence, fostering world-class training programs that have shaped the careers of many young pulmonologists across Asia.
Pioneering Contributions to Interventional Pulmonology
Dr. Joseph’s expertise spans a wide array of advanced interventional pulmonology procedures, including rigid bronchoscopy, airway tumor debulking, stent and valve placements, cryobiopsies for interstitial lung disease (ILD), and bronchoscopy-guided treatment of post-TB and intubation airway stenosis. Notably, he was the first in the world to perform rigid bronchoscopy-guided cryobiopsy for diagnosing Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease (DPLD) in an infant, a groundbreaking achievement that solidified his place as a global leader in the field.
To date, Dr. Joseph has personally performed over 5,000 flexible bronchoscopies, 3,000 rigid bronchoscopic central airway procedures, and 2,000 Linear Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) procedures, further cementing his role in advancing pulmonology practices.
Impact through Education
In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Tinku Joseph has made significant strides in the field of medical education. As the course director for several Interventional Pulmonology programs under ABIP, he has trained a new generation of specialists, empowering them with the skills necessary to perform life-saving procedures.

He has published several authoritative books and research papers, including the case-based approach to interventional pulmonology and the chief editor of the International Pulmonologist Consensus on COVID-19, which was apparently the first book to be published on COVID-19 from India. His groundbreaking work on transbronchial lung cryobiopsy for diagnosing DPLD in infants was published in the Respirology journal in February 2023, showcasing his continuous drive to push the boundaries of pulmonology research.
Minimally Invasive, High-Impact Care
At the heart of Dr. Joseph’s practice is a deep commitment to delivering minimally invasive treatments that ensure quicker recovery times and better patient outcomes. His interventions, which include tumor resections, airway stent placements, and management of conditions like post-TB and post-intubation stenosis, are performed with a focus on reducing the need for prolonged hospital stays, offering patients a better quality of life with shorter recovery periods.
