UltraTech Cement, India’s biggest cement and ready-mix concrete (RMC) manufacturer, said today that it intends to raise the amount of green energy in its entire energy mix to 85% by 2030. By FY 2026, the corporation intends to triple its overall green energy share from 22% to 60%.

As part of its RE100 pledge, UltraTech aims to fulfill 100% of its electrical needs via renewable energy sources by 2050. It has adopted many programs to increase the amount of green energy in the total energy mix, including switching to renewable energy sources and increasing Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS).

UltraTech currently has 691 MW of green energy capacity, including 262 MW of installed WHRS capacity and 429 MW of contracted renewable energy. This amounts to around 22% of UltraTech’s current energy demand.

With logistics partners, UltraTech is harnessing new technologies to minimize dependency on thermal energy in industrial processes while simultaneously boosting the adoption of sustainable transportation. The corporation has declared that it would not invest in thermal power capacity further, in keeping with its goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing usage of renewable energy.

UltraTech has collaborated with Coolbrook, a Finland-based transformational technology and engineering firm, to jointly develop a project to decarbonize its cement production process using Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater (RDH) technology. The RDH technology employs renewable energy to power the heating operations in cement manufacture, eliminating the demand for fossil fuels and accelerating the decarbonization of cement manufacturing. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is also being investigated by UltraTech in partnership with startup technology firms such as CarbonOrO, Coomtech, and Fortera.

As part of the government of India’s eFAST project, UltraTech has vowed to install 500 electric trucks and add 1000 CNG/LNG vehicles in the 40-tonne category to their operations by June 2025. It is working with its logistics partners to install CNG and LNG trucks to replace traditional diesel vehicles wherever practicable.

UltraTech now operates over 390 CNG vehicles and 50 LNG trucks across 17 production facilities. The corporation intends to swiftly expand this program to additional production facilities.
