Good news for auto enthusiasts! India’s automotive calendar is heating up, with May 2026 shaping up to be one of the most power-packed months for electric vehicles (EVs) this year. According to recent data, EV sales rose 69.5% year-on-year (YoY) to 79,063 units during January–April 2026. Notably, Tata Motors continues to dominate the EV segment.
From a long-awaited Tata revival to Toyota’s electric ambitions and MG’s flagship diesel SUV, here is what to watch out for in May 2026:
Tata Sierra EV
The Sierra EV is expected to share its powertrain with the Harrier EV and arrive loaded with a triple screen setup, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, multiple drive modes, and ADAS. It will be offered in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, giving buyers meaningful choice across price points.
The Sierra EV will take on a formidable set of rivals including the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Vinfast VF6, and MG Windsor EV — a segment that barely existed two years ago and is now one of the most fiercely contested in the country. Tata, which built its EV dominance on the Nexon and Tiago, is now pushing upmarket.
Expected to be priced between ₹20–25 lakh (ex-showroom).
Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella
Toyota enters the electric mid-size SUV space in May with the Urban Cruiser Ebella, and the range numbers alone are enough to turn heads. The Ebella will be offered with two LFP battery options — a 49kWh unit producing 144hp and a 61kWh unit producing 174hp — with the larger battery claiming a range of 543km and the smaller rated at 440km.
The cabin comes equipped with a 10.1-inch driver’s display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, and sliding, reclining and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats. As the badge-engineered sibling of the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, pricing is expected to fall in a similar bracket, making it one of the more accessible Toyotas on sale in India. Three variants are expected at launch.
Expected to start from ₹18 lakh for the base 49kWh variant, going up to ₹24 lakh for the top-spec 61kWh version
Two significant launches in one month — two electric, one premium diesel — reflect just how quickly India’s car market is maturing. Buyers at every price point now expect longer range, more features, and sharper design. The brands delivering on all three in May will set the tone for the second half of 2026.
Beyond the EVs, May 2026 brings two notable non-electric launches. Honda has a busy month with both the City facelift and the ZR-V SUV debuting on May 22. The City facelift is expected to bring refreshed styling, a larger touchscreen, ventilated seats, and a 360-degree camera, continuing with existing petrol and hybrid engine options.
The ZR-V, Honda’s new premium SUV, is expected to carry a hybrid powertrain and ADAS, with an estimated price of ₹40–50 lakh — placing it squarely against the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq.
At the top end of the market, the BMW M440i Convertible is expected to be priced in May — a niche, two-door lifestyle car with a 3.0-litre inline six turbo producing 369bhp, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and a 48V mild hybrid system.
And then there is the MG Majestor — the most delayed launch of the month. First unveiled in January 2026, the Majestor missed two launch dates — April 20 and April 27 — after media drives wrapped up in April. Expected to be priced between ₹40–45 lakh, it is a diesel-powered, body-on-frame seven-seater taking direct aim at the Toyota Fortuner. Watch out for these launches!
