History of Swiggy

In 2011, Swiggy was started under the name Bundl as a courier service company in India. Started by Nandan Reddy and Sriharsha Majety. But later on, in the year 2014, the company changed the operations from courier service to enter the food delivery market. In Aug 2014, Nandan and Sriharsha started Swiggy and entered the food delivery market.

From 2014 to 2023, Swiggy has entered into different segments of the business.

At first, Swiggy started a cloud kitchen named as “The Bowl Company” in 2017. IN the same year Swiggy also entered into the kitchen incubator business under the brand name “Swiggy Access”.

In 2019, Swiggy started “Swiggy Stores” as general product delivery services.

Swiggy Go was launched as a pickup and dropoff service. Later on named as Swiggy Genie.

During Pandemic, Swiggy has turned “Aapda to Avsar” and started delivering alcohol to the doorsteps in a few states.

Later in 2020, Swiggy has also launched Instamart, as a grocery delivering service.

2023

  • Swiggy has acquired retail distribution company LYNK logistics limited. The deal was closed in the month of July 2023. LYNK is one of the largest FMCG retail distribution companies having more than 1 lacs stores in India.

  • LYNK associates with leading FMCG brands in INdia and works as an authorised distributor to connect them with retail stores.
  • It is also in faster order delivery and on the shelf availability.

2022.

  • Swiggy acquired dining and table reservation platform “Dineout”.

  • The deal was closed at around $120 million.
  • Though Dineout continues to operate as an independent platform.
  • The acquisition will allow Swiggy to enjoy the synergy from the acquisition and increase the reach to more customers
  • Dineout was founded in 2016, by Ankit Mehrotra,Nikhil Bakshi, Sahil Jain and Vivek Kapoor which offers B2C and B2B services in many restaurants across India.
  • It has around 45000+ restaurant partners in India.

2019

  • Kint.io, an AI platform for designing and developing software was acquired by Swiggy in 2019. This AI based platform applies deep learning and computer vision for object recognition.
  • Kint.io was founded by Pavithra Solai and Jagannathan Veeraghavan.
  • The deal was closed at an undisclosed amount.
  • The acquisition will add value to the customer service and provide them assistance in searching and discovering restaurants. Also able to help solve unique customer problems.

2018

  • Swiggy has acquired two different startups in the year 2018.
  • Scootsy Logistics
  • A mumbai based, food and fashion delivery service company.
  • The company was founded by Rishi Khiani, Sandeep Das
  • The deal was closed at around Rs. 50 crore.
  • The acquisition will help swiggy enjoy the advantage of Scoosty’s strong network of restaurants and help in expansion of business.
  • Suprdaily

  • Suprdaily is a milk delivery startup based in mumbai.
  • It was started by Puneet Kumar, Sreyas Nagdawane and Rahot Jain.
  • The acquisition will help Swiggy enjoy the effect of synergy and resources and infra of Suprdaily
  • Suprdaily has a wide customer base and network in the delivery..

2017

  • In the third year of its operation Swiggy has acqui-hired “48 east” , a Bangalore based Asian Food Startup. 

  • The company was founded by Joseph Cherian and Nabhojit Ghosh.
  • 48 east provides cuisines of multiple states of different nations in the world.
  • The acquisition aimed at focusing on solving for gaps in consumer supply through various Strategic plans.
  • It helped Swiggy serve its customers more strongly and expand its business at the same time.

This was the major acquisition made by Swiggy from its inception. Furthermore, Swiggy has made several investments in different startups apart from these.

Other Investment by Swiggy

In 2022, invested around $180 million in one of the top and fastest growing bike taxi companies Rapido. 

In 2019, Swiggy has also invested in Fingerlix, a ready to eat food brand company for Rs. 30 crore. 

From 2014 Swiggy has grown at tremendous level and expanded its operations with acquiring multiple startups. In terms of valuation as well, Swiggy has risen from year to year. 

Swiggy has partnered with many restaurants food cafes and popular fast food brands. Mc Donald’s, KFC, Burger King, Pizza hut are some of the partnerships of Swiggy.
