Microsoft was co-founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Bill Gates hugely contributed during the microcomputer developments during the 1970s along with 1980s. William Henry Gates III (Bill Gates) was born on October 28th, 1955, co-founded one of the largest computer software organizations in the history of mankind.

Bill was born in Seattle. He was raised in Seattle too. Gates along with Allen, being a childhood friend, created Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico. 

Bill Gates operated as the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft till 2000, when he was succeeded by Steve Ballmer. Gates remained Chairman of Microsoft’s Board of Directors along with being a chief software engineer. In the month of June, 2008, Bill started working part-time at Microsoft along with working full-time at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation is a charitable organization formed by Bill and then-wife, Melinda in 2000.

Around early 2014, Bill Gates became a technology advisor to Satya Nadella, the current CEO of Microsoft. Over the years, Bill Gates has devoted his time towards issues like climate change, education along with global health and many others. He has donated large sums of money to several research programs and charities through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill Gates stepped away from Microsoft’s day-to-day work back in 2008 and pursued several philanthropic projects. He also founded several companies like TerraPower, BEN, bgC3 and several others. In around 2010, ‘The Giving Pledge’ was created by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, where they along with several other billionaires pledged to donate about half of their wealth to charity.

Bill Gates was just about 13 years, when he wrote a software program for the first time. Back then he was studying at Lakeside prep school. An interesting story inspired us when Bill was studying in eighth grade. The Mother’s Club of Lakeside used money from rummage sale to buy a Teletype Model 33, which is an electromechanical teleprinter printer for performing simple office work. 

They also bought a General Electric system computer for the students. Bill was extremely curious in programming the General Electric system in BASIC. The first software program was an implementation of tic-tac-toe, where users can play games. 

In 1975, Bill Gates read about Altair 8800 from an issue by ‘Popular Electronics’. He contacted MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems), where he said that he and some of his friends are working on a project about a BASIC interpreter for Altair 8800. But they didn’t have any code written and just wanted to draw the attention of MITS. When the President of MITS wanted to meet Bill and his friends for a formal demonstration. 

In just a few weeks, Bill and others developed the BASIC interpreter. MITS hired Bill and Paul and Bill took an effective leave of absence from Harvard University to work on this project in Albuquerque, New Mexico. ‘Micro-Soft’ was the name of the team, Bill and Paul. Within a year, they registered the company as Microsoft. 

The Altair BASIC software by Microsoft was appreciated by computer hobbyists. But Bill found out that unauthorized copies of the software were getting available to the market. To this, he wrote a letter to MITS Hobbyists that Microsoft did not receive any share for the software and such practice blocks any opportunity for developers to create remarkable products in the future. Microsoft stopped all operations with MITS in the end of 1976 and relocated to Bellevue, Washington. 

Growth of Microsoft-

Microsoft continued to create software for several systems. Around 1970 IBM reached out to Microsoft to collaborate on a software project for an upcoming ‘IBM PC’. After several challenges, IBM expressed the need for an operating system from Microsoft. Bill and Paul navigated towards the 86-DOS system, which Tim Paterson from Seattle Computer Products (SCP) created for hardwares, which is the same as PC.

Microsoft collaborated with SCP, where Microsoft became 86-DOS’ official licensing agent and ultimately owned 86-DOS. Tim was employed by Microsoft and IBM received PC DOS for a one-time fee of about $50,000. 

The project with IBM garnered brand reputation to Microsoft, which gradually evolved from a small company to multinational organization. In around 1985, Bill Gates and Microsoft launched ‘Windows’. This product was competing with Apple’s Macintosh and the world witnessed a holistic growth of technology.

The journey of Bill Gates is fascinating and he worked as an expert software developer during the early years of Microsoft. But Bill mostly operated from a managerial or an executive position. 

A symbol of excellence defines the success story of Bill Gates. For him innovation is never-ending and requires patience and proactive efforts. Bill Gates devoted his mind towards philanthropy, where he played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic. His foundation greatly worked on research about the disease. Bill has always been conscious about the effects of climate change.

He thinks that governments should put all their efforts into strengthening clean and green energy. In human history, the transition from one type of energy to another has taken some amount of time. But Bill Gates wants us to focus on the technology today we have at our disposal. We also have access to data and knowledge which should be utilized to create an inclusive environment for the world.
