New Delhi, October 4, 2025 – On Saturday, the BCCI announced the India squad for the 3 matches ODI and T20I series against Australia starting October 19 in Perth. The most significant alteration is in the captaincy, with Rohit Sharma making way for Shubman Gill to function at the helm of the ODI side. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain.

Gill, 26, is currently India’s captain in Tests and ODIs, and he also serves as the vice-captain in T20Is. The decision is perceived as part of India’s long-term planning with Gill expected to lead the team until the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Rohit, Virat Back – but with a Warning

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are included in the ODI team, in what will be their first international games in more than seven months. However, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has stated that their experience is welcome, but their performance in Australia will determine how long they remain in the ODI setup.

Rohit Sharma has been informed about the change of captaincy. We don’t play too many ODIs, so we needed to give the next guy enough time,” Agarkar said after announcing the team.

The move is considered Agarkar’s risk — trusting Rohit and Virat at least for the present but making place for the younger players.

Important Changes in the Squad

  • Jasprit Bumrah has been given rest for the ODIs.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal has been brought back.
  • Youngsters like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana and wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel have been added.
  • KL Rahul will continue as the primary wicketkeeper in ODIs.

Teams

One Day International Squad: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (Vice-Captain), KL Rahul (Wicket Keeper), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (Wicket Keeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The Path Forward

A new chapter is opening up in Indian cricket. With Gill in charge, the selectors have put faith in the next generation. There is experience in Rohit and Virat’s return but their form in Australia will ultimately determine how long they remain part of India’s plans for ODIs.
