In an effort to increase local demand and reduce dependency on imported natural gas, India will begin mixing compressed biogas with natural gas, the government said in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, the required phased introduction will begin in April 2025 at 1% for usage in homes and cars. By 2028, the required percentage of blending will have risen to almost 5%.

India, one of the biggest importers of gas and oil in the world, aims to reduce the cost of its imports and ships in around half of the gas it uses overall.

The government also wants aircraft turbine fuel to include 1% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2027, increasing to 2% by 2028. According to the announcement, foreign flights would be the first to be subject to the SAF objectives.

The actions are intended to assist India in meeting its 2070 net zero emissions objectives.

The main components of biogas are methane and carbon dioxide. It is a source of renewable energy. Anaerobic digestion is the process by which organic waste breaks down to create biogas. Methane and carbon dioxide are released when microorganisms break down plant or animal waste in the absence of oxygen. This page goes into depth about a few applications for biogas.

Biogas is environmentally beneficial and may be used for a variety of purposes, including heating, cooling, drying, and cooking. It is used in the generation of steam, methanol, and electricity. With the use of a digester and a tube, biogas may be transferred into the kitchen. With the exception of electric current, biogas creates less pollution while cooking than other fuels. Biogas byproducts may also be used as fertilizer. Producing light inside is another benefit of biogas.

Because biogas produces organic fertilizers as a byproduct, it is beneficial to agriculture. Utilizing biogas makes a home more environmentally friendly and aids in the reduction of pollutants. It may be utilized to reduce global warming by serving as an alternative fuel. It’s an inexpensive and accessible technology. It may be used as a fuel for transportation as well.
