As directed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all banks in India, including the State Bank of India (SBI), are closed today, Saturday, September 27. The closure is due to today being the fourth Saturday of the month, which is a regular holiday for all banks. Tomorrow, September 28, banks will also remain closed since it is a Sunday, giving bank employees a two-day weekend.
What is the reason behind banks being closed on certain days?
The Reserve Bank of India has established a policy regarding the norm of designated holidays for Banks. All Banks are required to close as follows:
- All Sundays
- The second Saturday of each month
- The fourth Saturday of each month
Besides the holidays stated, it may also be possible for banks to close in certain states for local festivals, celebrations, public holidays, or locally recognized celebrations. This policy helps banks plan their workloads and provides employees with an appropriate rest day.

Determining Bank Holidays
Each year, the RBI, in collaboration with state governments, creates a bank holiday calendar. Holidays generally include national holidays, festivals for a specific state, cultural celebrations, and a similar day each week, such as Sunday. The RBI publishes an official list of holidays on its website, which banks adhere to without question.
By informing customers of the schedule ahead of time, customers can make plans for their banking activities without any last-minute issues, particularly for weekends and holiday periods.
