AC Charania, an Indian-American expert in the aerospace sector, has been appointed by NASA as its next chief technologist. He will be the agency’s primary counselor on technology policy and projects at its headquarters in Washington.

In his position, Charania will manage technological engagement with other government agencies, the private sector, and external stakeholders in addition to coordinating NASA’s agency-wide technology investments with mission needs across six mission directorates.

The Office for Technology, Policy, and Strategy at NASA is where the position is located.

According to Charania in a NASA news release, “the rate of advancement we desire in the 21st century is based upon choosing and developing a portfolio of technologies into systems to accomplish our objectives.”

Administrator Bill Nelson will mostly get advice from Charania. He worked for Reliable Robotics, a company that strives to provide approved autonomous vehicles to commercial aviation, as vice president of product strategy before joining NASA.

According to a press release from the agency, Charania oversaw the establishment of the FastForward industry group, which is devoted to high-speed point-to-point transportation. 

He holds degrees in aerospace engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University as well as a bachelor’s in economics.
