Meta India just brought in someone who knows how to deal with the government. The company appointed Aman Jain as its new head of Public Policy, and he will start early next year. This hiring matters because India is working on major tech regulations right now, and Meta wants to make sure it has a seat at the table when those rules get written.

Jain is leaving Amazon, where he spent over two years running the public policy division for the Indian marketplace. Before that, he was at Google India for seven years, handling government relations and policy. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and International Relations from Syracuse University.

Who Is Aman Jain?

Jain isn’t new to playing the policy game with Indian regulators. At Google, he managed government relations when the company was navigating fintech rules and payment regulations. At Amazon, he dealt with marketplace policies, competition issues and technology regulations. That experience across multiple sectors and multiple companies makes him someone who understands how things work in New Delhi.

He’s also advised India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which means he’s spent time inside the government machinery itself. That kind of relationship matters when you’re trying to influence how officials think about tech policy.

What He’ll Actually Do

At Meta, Jain will handle all of the company’s government and regulatory strategy. He reports to Simon Milner, who runs policy for Meta across Asia Pacific. This is a real job, not a window-dressing hire. He’ll be the person talking to government officials, negotiating with regulators, and advising Meta’s leadership on what India’s government is likely to do next.

Meta needed to fill this role fast. Shivnath Thukral, the previous policy head, left in June to join PhonePe. For the last six months, Meta has been operating without a full-time policy leader in India. That’s a risky position when regulators are actively writing rules.

Why Timing Matters

India’s government is building regulations around artificial intelligence, digital platforms, data protection and online content. Companies that have smart people listening to these conversations from day one tend to do better when the final rules come out.

Meta operates at a scale in India that demands political skill. Over one billion people use Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp in the country. The company faces constant questions about how it moderates content, where it stores data, and how it competes with Indian apps. Getting government policy right is essential.

The Real Story

This appointment shows Meta isn’t treating India as a side project. The company is bringing in someone expensive and experienced from a major tech competitor because India is that important. Meta needs a policy operator who can walk into a room with a senior government official and have a serious conversation about regulation.

For India’s tech scene, it means global platforms are getting serious about understanding how things work locally. You can’t just parachute in and run things from Silicon Valley anymore. India demands people who speak the language, understand the politics, and know which official matters most.

Jain starts when India’s digital rules are still being shaped. His job is making sure Meta’s voice is heard in those conversations.
